At Triple Flip, we’re so excited when we can bring in a high-quality and cool product that supports active girls as they’re doing their sport, or out n’ about living their Flip life! One Fab Find we’ve carried for years, has been the SIGG-brand water bottle. We fell in love with the funky designs and, more importantly, the healthy leak-proof liner that didn’t release any toxins or bad ‘plasticky’ taste into your favorite drinks.
In the news this week we learned that trace amounts of BPA (bisphenol A) had been found in the liner of SIGG’s water bottles made before August 2008. We at Triple Flip were unaware of this, as we understood the liner to be leak-proof and free of any toxins. We always make a concentrated effort to ensure all the products we sell are safe and of the highest quality, and we understood the SIGG water bottles to be a healthy, environmental option for active girls to keep hydrated with.
In August 2008, after several years of research and development, SIGG switched up their lining with a new EcoCare Liner that is totally BPA free, and is also produced in a more environmentally-friendly way, to ensure it is hitting the highest standard. All bottles produced since August 2008 have this Eco Liner – however, there are still some of the bottles with the original liners that have been available for sale and in use.
Wondering which liner your bottle has? It’s easy to tell just by looking inside. The new EcoCare Liner is cream-colored inside.
Like everyone else, we’re trying to make sense of it all. We are concerned, first and foremost, with the safety of all the products we sell. So, we went right to SIGG to find out how the company was addressing the issue
On SIGG’s website, Steve Wasik, CEO, has written a letter about the issue. While he does say that up until a year ago, the SIGG inner liner did contain trace amounts of BPA, they’ve always had strict regulations and carried out heavy-duty tests to ensure that their liners did not leach ANY chemicals, and SIGG bottles have always passed with a 100% safety rating. They regularly post the results of these tests so that people can feel confident in their product as a healthy choice. You can read about SIGG and their response to the BPA issue here: http://mysigg.com/bulletin/
SIGG maintains that these bottles with the original liners are safe. However, in our commitment to be an advocate to our customers and to choose the highest standards available for the products we carry, from today on, we will only sell SIGG bottles that have the new EcoCare Liner.
For anyone that is concerned and wishes to replace their bottle, SIGG is offering a free exchange program for any bottles that have the original liner, since they too, want consumers to be 100% satisfied with the product. Exchange is available by sending in your SIGG bottle to SIGG Canada. Once they receive the bottle, SIGG will issue a gift certificate to allow you to buy a new EcoCare lined SIGG Bottle directly from their website.
To exchange your SIGG bottle with the original liner, please call 905-267-3812 and their customer-friendly service people will help you out! These replacement gift certificates are only made available directly through SIGG, and not through any retail outlets.
